How about an answer from KMI?

Read through this thread for my earlier message. I put a 100K linear taper pot in my Ernie Ball VP Jr, and get a perfect smooth output from 0-127 through the SoftStep (I tested it with MIDI Monitor).

Soundog: are you using an insert cable?

No, pot is wired as described in my message, and connected directly to a female stereo/TRS 1/4" jack. I am not using an insert or the "tuner" jack, but this could be done I suppose. Or you could just wire it to an 1/8" male jack with cable to go directly into the softstep...the only tricky part of the operation is getting the string wrapped and routed correctly over the pulleys, but there are instructions for this on the ernie ball site.

OK, just noticed what you actually said, you wired it up TRS.
I was going to put a 100k pot in myself but I'm having a hard time finding one with a shaft long enough to hold the pulley. Did you have someone do it?

I've had a google around and not found much to help; does anyone know where I'd find info on what I need to do to mod myself an expression pedal (for controlling with my SoftStep) out of a Dunlop Crybaby CB95 wah pedal?
It has an input and and output (both mono I presume).

I see a couple of articles for making a "volume" pedal out of the way pedal - that won't work for use with te SoftStep will it?

brooklyn - I'm pretty sure I bought this pot at Radio Shack....they sell 100k linear ones with a long shaft. I didn't even have to cut it off to fit; it extends all the way to the side wall of the pedal. But you can easily cut them to length. Can't remember if I had to do any other fitting, but looking in the pedal it looks like it went right in. Yes, I did it myself. As mentioned, look online for instructions on replacing the string, it has good photos on how the string gets wrapped, and is important (or take good notes and draw pictures of the wrapping). If you do it yourself, pay close attention to the string routing. And getting it hooked on the spring is tricky, I used long needle-nosed pliers.

ronandc - all a pedal needs is an appropriate potentiometer with a 3-wire output to the softstep, either via a cable with male jack on it that plugs directly to the ss, or a female jack attached to the pedal. Essentially all you need to do to redo most pedals is 1) if the pedal just has a mono jack/output, rewire the existing pot with 3-wires (see earlier message on where wires go), 2) test it with softstep (reverse your wiring if you have backward operation, see earlier message), 3) if it works you're done, 4) if it doesn't work, find a 100k pot that will fit/replace the existing one, and wire it up. Other ratings may work, but the 100k calibrated nicely for me.

thanks for the tips soundog.

if anyone else comes across this thread looking for a 100k pot for EB Jr.VP: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... 107596080#

Edit:
UPDATE - this radio shack part linked here does not work, at least on the EB VP Jr I have. The threads on that radio shack pot are too short (and too wide) for the hole that it sits in.

High All
just thought I would mention that most controller pots are 10k - kinda standard . . .
My 10 k pot works fine
YMMV

This is correct! The SoftStep requires an Expression pedal with 3 wire connection (an 1/8" jack that is stereo)... Around the KMI offices, we use the Roland EV-5 expression pedal, which works just fine!

Hope this helps.
