Was the cable you tried shorter? Things like the SS freezing during an update are almost always due to a cable/connection issue.
Whatever information your Windows system gives you about the crash, might be helpful in figuring out why it's happening.

Yes I tried a shorter cable and a different USB connector on the computer plus I downloaded the app again, just for the hell of it.
I do hope it isn't a connector or hardware issue because I am in Brazil, not a (relatively) civilized place like US or the UK where I got the unit.

Here is a crash event - dont understand why it is saying basice ditor.exe...but anyway

That error code is an access violation. So the editor may be looking for something that isn't there, or that it doesn't have permission to access.
Did you move any of the editors/folders out of the unarchived .zip file?
Are you sure that you have read/write permissions for all of the folders/files in the Editor folder?

Thank you for your continuing input.

All the editor files are in the same folder that was unzipped.

And the editor>SS communication did work OK - until I tried using modlines including the expression pedal and/or had the pedal connected.

You got me on the permissions thing for the folder though. have to check how I discover if I do or not.

OK - some permissions for system users were disabled, or at least unticked, have rectified. Will test.

No go. Same problem.

BTW changing anything in the setting windows gets sent to the Softstep automatically. I assume that is a different set of protocols to Key presets.

Well at this point, I'm not sure what to tell you. Something weird is going on with your system, that I can't track down, because I can't reproduce it all all. The fact that an Advanced Editor crash, cited the Basic editor as the faulty application is weird.

Well, TBH, that happened on arriving at a a rehearsal and trying a couple of things. What is weird is that the only event there shows up as basic editor. I just edited my pervious post.

But as I mentioned before, it all WAS working fine - so why would it suddenly not work?

I don't know, it's really strange. Like I said, Ive never seen this before, and I can't reproduce it, so my hands are kind of tied.
I'm not convinced by the fact that it has something to do with what is contained in the preset. What's in the preset NEVER has anything to do with crashes. We don't allow you to put bad data into modlines that would cause crashes.
I have seen updates hang due to bad cables/connections/USB hubs etc.

OK I understand re: the programming.

When I get a chance tomorrow, I will try with no other USB devices connected apart from the SS - not sure if I have tried that yet. Seems hard to believe it would be the hardware - ie USB connector on the SS.

SO why can I still adjust things in settings window and have them transmit to the SS? I changed the sensitivity today and saw the led on the SS registering the change.

 And of course, it just occurred to me to try this with an older XP laptop I have lying around - if the prob is the same then it won't be because of my main system....but the hardware itself - no?
