USB port relocation

Postby Pongoid » Tue Jun 04, 2013 11:34 pm

It might be nice to see the mini USB port relocated to a 1/4" (or less) from the corner of the surface it is on now. If you are looking at the port face on, imagine moving it to the left approximately 3.5". This would place the cable much more practically, so that if the QuNeo is sitting in front of a laptop, the cable is back and more out of the way; and if it's sitting to the right of the laptop, it's more easily run behind the screen, again keeping it out of the way. Obviously, placing the QuNeo to the left of the laptop interferes with ports, at least on a Mac, so centering the USB port isn't relevant to that.

Food for thought.

Thanks, this is food for thought. Part of the difficulty of designing these products is thinking for computers that aren't macs (as we all use macs around the office, part of our bay area bias I guess) but I do think that it's a good suggestion, maybe a non-middle location could be good for playing styles. Sending in more examples of playing styles and device location styles/preferences (anybody please send in) will help us in future designs.

I use my QuNeo on my desktop (no mac) and run into similar issue with the usb cable interfering with my mouse or hitting my keyboard. but no matter where you put it, it will be wrong for someone - for instance, I would prefer it hanging out of the top!

But, then again.. where is "Top" - there is no rule that the pads need to be on the right.. I actually have been using mine with the pads as the "top"....

Forgot what I really wanted to say.. a more STURDY input would be even better.. I have had some issues with light bumps making the connection of the micro-usb jitter enough to "reboot" the quneo.. annoying. I think I would almost rather a hardwire with a full sized USB at the end ... Food for thought.

You need a new micro-USB cable. Anytime light bumps will cause a power cycle on the QuNeo it is due to a bad cable. We have yet to run into a QuNeo with a bad USB port (though this is not meant to imply that it's impossible). If you submit a support ticket here: http://www.keithmcmillen.com/support we can get you a new one. Or if you'd rather not wait, micro-USB cables are sold at most retail stores — often in the cellphone area.

in the meantime i think i'll order one of these to help reduce the cable head footprint as to bring the QuNeo in more tighter on the right side of my laptop...

Yeah, I use one of those myself. Never had any problems.

Yes the current location it not really good. Also, something a bit sturdier wouldn't be bad, I'm always afraid to break either the plug or the QuNeo itself.

I know typically "smaller" = more delicate, but anyone concerned with the durability of a micro-USB port should really check out the Durability section of the USB WIkipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB#Durability

The newer Micro-USB receptacles are designed for up to 10,000 cycles of insertion and removal between the receptacle and plug, compared to 1,500 for the standard USB and 5,000 for the Mini-USB receptacle. This is accomplished by adding a locking device and by moving the leaf-spring connector from the jack to the plug, so that the most-stressed part is on the cable side of the connection. This change was made so that the connector on the less expensive cable would bear the most wear instead of the more expensive micro-USB device.

Thanks, I was unaware that right angle mini-USB cables existed until now.
