pitch bend pad

Postby johnchop » Tue Jun 18, 2013 3:47 am

I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong re: pitch bend, or if I have an issue with my controller.

The pitch bend pad seems to require a lot of pressure and doesn't do a full bend for the number of steps I specify. It's often just shy of the desired bend pitch, and it takes a lot of pressure to get there, specifically when bending up.

In addition, the response is variable ... sometimes it will bend up, sometimes not at all, and sometimes it will bend down.

Thoughts?

Had the range set wrong. Set to 0 - 127 it works alright...response is still uneven and a bit twitchy. What should my expectation be in terms of this holding a somewhat constant pitch when bent?

Right now, it's more like a pitch-randomizer button.

Was this thing even tested?

In my experience the bend pad actually takes a much lighter touch and is more of a sliding across the top motion, rather than pressing in and tilting the button.

And it always helps to check the editor to see what the presets are doing. For some reason we decided to set the "min" and "max" for the pitch bend modline to different values each preset (though I think we changed this in the most recent, 1.1.1, update), so each preset will have a different bend range.

You can also adjust the "Bend Range" parameter in the editor to give you a smaller or larger bend range.

Thanks. After a bit more practice based on your suggestion, it seems more like the Tilt feel - you have to give it a stab to engage it, then the lighter touch works. Will take some getting used to.

Yeah, the bend pad can be tricky. It does really feel and look like the sort of button that you should mash in and tilt with some force, but it's actually pretty delicate in terms of response — durability-wise it should be solid.

I am finding the whole unit seems to like a lighter touch, seems like it will respond with some practice. I am also more interested in some of the alternative controller possibilities it opens us, as I have an old Oberheim TK which has a decent keyboard but little else for control, plus modular stuff.

Just wanted to follow up and say that a replacement from Sweetwater yielded better results. The pitchbend pad is more usable, and certainly knowing the proper technique helps!

I'm having trouble with the pitch bend pad. It does not seem to respond like the other keys and needs much more force to initially engage the pitch bend. At the minimum force of engagement, the pitch shifts suddenly very far. However, once engaged, I can pull back pressure quite a bit for a more subtle effect. But I cannot engage it with subtlety.

Is this a bug? Is my unit defective? Am I not using it properly?

Thanks.

P.S. it helps to set the pitch bend range to full (0 - 127) in order to see how it behaves.
