Rudimental Drumming

I can't quite get dialed in. Does anybody have any recommended parameters that will help me achieve better contrast between accents/taps, communicate grace notes, and improve roll quality? I have some big ideas for BopPads in the classroom, but I have to be able to get more expressiveness than I've been able to.
