how to hook up a sustain pedal?

Hello, I'd like to build an adaptor for the CV input jack that I can use with a standard sustain pedal (like a Roland DP2), which has a 1/4" plug. I'd be grateful to know what needs to be connected to what to have the QuNexus see the switch as sustain.

Perhaps I can even avoid building a new cable. Would this y-adaptor, for example, that splits out stereo to 2 mono 1/4 inch jacks, do the trick?

The CV manual (which can be found here: http://www.keithmcmillen.com/qunexus/downloads — it also gets installed with the editor) shows how everything needs to be wired. I believe most stereo 3.5mm (1/8 inch) to stereo 1/4 inch cables should work fine.

Tip = CV1
1st ring = +5V
2nd ring = CV2
Sleeve = Ground

A normal stereo 3.5mm will work because the ground sleeve will just ground CV2, the pedal should come in on CV1.

The cable you linked to won't work because the 1/4" jacks are just TS (mono) — they need to be TRS (stereo) for an expression pedal. Something like this should work: http://www.amazon.com/Hosa-MHE100-5-Hea ... to+1%2F4+f

I finally got the adaptor you suggested and tried it out both with a Roland DP-2 and standard piano-style sustain pedal and neither works. Is there some programming involved in having the QuNexus 'listen' for a sustain pedal switch and having it then transmit the correct controller value? At this point it's not clear how the QuNexus is understanding the signal from the pedal.

I built the equivalent of the adaptor you sell as part of your CV kit, the one that in the manual is listed as "This is helpful when connecting a Sustain Pedal to the CV 1-2 in port." Still no luck. So there's clearly some sort of programming to be done—or at least I hope it's this, because the sustain pedal input doesn't appear to work otherwise. Any ideas?

Yeah, it's tough to see what's going on since there is no way to visualize the live pedal input at the moment.

How are you trying to look at the resulting MIDI (or, what is supposed to be the resulting MIDI)? By default the resulting MIDI from the CV input should be coming in on QuNexus Port 3 (the CV port), channel 2, either CC 112 or 113. If you're only looking at Port 1 or 2 on QuNexus you won't see anything.

Port 1 = Data to and from the keyboard itself
Port 2 = Data coming to and from the Expander
Port 3 = Data coming to a from the CV inputs/outputs

I'm using MidiMonitor for Mac (snoize) and getting nothing from 112 or 113---unless I'm plugging the 1/8th inch TRS jack into the QUNexus. Then I get all sorts of events. But using the adaptor such as you sell or the one I bought for this occasion I can't get a rise out of CC112. My sense is that it's just a hookup question, but I'm a bit stumped as to how to solve it.

Just hoping for a response to this--if you could let me know how a sustain pedal is supposed to work (this is not entirely clear from the manuals) it would help me figure out what's not working and why.

Hi everyone,

KMI support person Shani was super helpful and explained the whole thing, so I'll try to summarize for the record.

You can either buy the adaptor set that KM sells or build your own, but the key thing is that you need a 1/8" stereo (TRS) plug that connects to a mono 1/4" jack (TS) in this way:

TIP and RING from the 1/8" plug ---> TIP of the 1/4" jack
SLEEVE of the 1/8" plug ---> SLEEVE of the 1/4" jack

A garden variety 1/8" TRS to 1/4" TRS adaptor will NOT work.

Attached is a picture supplied by KM support of the wiring for the female 1/4" mono jack.
